We are recruiting for a Senior Research and Development Engineer on behalf of a leading European designer and manufacturer of purpose designed exhaust and emission control systems for heavy duty diesel vehicles and equipment. Our client’s Research and Development department is responsible for assessing, demonstrating and developing new techniques, technologies and exhaust system products. They have a high project workload, comprising internal research projects, OEM product development and retrofit product development that provides opportunities for R&D Engineers at all levels with relevant experience in any of these areas: Exhaust aftertreatment development; engine/emissions testing; project management; NVH analysis/test; FEA analysis.

In this role you will be responsible for:

  • Leading and assisting OEM technical development, from concept to validation
  • Leading and assisting with new product demonstration and product or test method development projects
  • Advising internal and external customers on technical issues
  • Evaluating current and new emissions-reductions technologies and silencer systems by test, prediction and field trial as appropriate
  • Developing and validating methods and techniques for simulation of aftertreatment systems
  • Identifying, and presenting justification for, new research opportunities
  • Developing, and training others in, techniques for prediction, measurement and analysis
  • Developing and managing relationships with external expert suppliers
  • Training and mentoring junior staff in techniques for prediction, measurement and analysis

Person Specification:

Education and Qualifications:

  • A good Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering or appropriate science based subject

Technical Knowledge and Ability:

  • A broad grasp of engineering and scientific principles at professional level
  • Expert knowledge of fluid dynamics, thermodynamics and heat transfer
  • Demonstrable knowledge of automotive exhaust / emissions issues and IC engine fundamentals
  • Experience of managing or working on NVH (FEA) and CFD activities would be advantageous
  • Computer literate with a strong analytical background
  • A good balance of theoretical understanding and practical knowledge
